MLM Prospecting Tip – Dealing with Negative People

Today we talk about a very important MLM Prospecting Tip – Dealing with negative people.

dealing with negative people

There is a very common challenge many home based business owners and Network Marketers face when starting out – Dealing with negative people when prospecting. This negativity is capable of killing a dream just as fast as you had hopes of succeeding in this industry…and for many it is a hurdle that most don’t recover from. So, how do you handle negative people when prospecting and building your business?

What Defines A Negative Person?

Negative people are friends, family, strangers, associates, or prospects that talk badly, or in a non-positive way about your dreams, goals and how you plan on accomplishing them.
Understand that sometimes the people you love the most and who we think would be most open to hearing about our newfound venture can be the most hurtful. They know us, they know our past, they know our characteristics more than any stranger, and it’s that insight that can lead them to assume they can predict how much success (or failure) we’ll have.

Don’t let other peoples preconceived notions deter you from what you desire in life. When your family members, friends, or prospects are being negative about your network marketing business, or don’t want anything to do with it until they see you have some success, don’t falter, just stay focused on what made you want to build a business for yourself in the first place.

Dealing with Negative People When Prospecting

One skill all network marketers need to learn is how to connect to people and make them feel good about you. What most network marketers do that increases the negative responses they receive is that they try to “hard sell” their opportunity and force it on others. Understand that your products, services, compensation plan, or company culture may not be a good fit for your prospect.

So instead of leading with all the reasons why your network marketing business is so hot, seek to understand what your prospects problems are and if your home business can actually provide a solution. This will #1 minimize resistance, and #2 help your prospect realize you are not just trying to make a commission from them, but you are trying to truly help them reach their goals. When you show people you care, they begin to trust your recommendations, so never underestimate the power of building relationships when prospecting. Think about this quote:

“People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care”

How to Respond To Negative People

It’s important not to take people’s criticisms personally. Negative reactions to your network marketing business are not a reflection on you as a person. You also don’t want to give people the pleasure of knowing that their negative reactions or comments are hurtful.

Don’t be upset at people that are not happy for your new network marketing venture. If you allow people to stomp on your dreams, you will have a hard time succeeding in this business. Separate yourself from their negativity and instead focus on accepting the fact that while they may not be excited about your potential success, there are other people you can surround yourself with that will be supportive of your goals and want to see you succeed.

It’s up to you to believe enough in yourself to know you’ve found an awesome company that can bring great rewards to you and your family. Don’t neglect your dreams because others are not on the same page as you. Surround yourself with positive people, be OK with the people that choose to criticize you, focus on your goals, and pretty soon you will be living them.
