My Computer IS My Job
Those of us who work from home on our own personal computers are often accused of being unemployed. It isn’t hard to see why people would think such a thing. We don’t get up at 6 AM. We don’t hurry, hurry, hurry to get dressed and leave home. Nobody ever sees us back our cars out of the driveway to go to work or see us catch the commuter train to get to our jobs in the city.
Nobody sees us drag ourselves home late in the evening five days a week. I suppose that it doesn’t really look like we are gainfully employed. Ah, but we ARE gainfully employed. Our computers provide us all of the transportation to and from our jobs that we need. We sit down, turn on our computers, and, presto, we ARE at work. We might still be in our jammies and we might still be drinking our first cup of coffee, but we ARE at work.
Take a look at: What I do on the Internet.
However, the very ease with which we get to and from our jobs presents a problem. Because it doesn’t look like we have a real job to the rest of the world, the rest of the world tends to think of us as being available; available to run errands, available to take poor old Aunt Rosie to the beauty parlor, available to drink coffee with and entertain the neighbors who really don’t work.
When we point out that we aren’t available, feelings get hurt, and let the pouting begin. We are just being “selfish” — or so “they” say. I wish I could tell you that there was an easy, pleasant, and sure-fire remedy for this touchy situation. Unfortunately, there isn’t.
Because others simply do not understand the concept of “My computer IS my job”, we have to set our own rules, abide by them ourselves, and firmly and consistently enforce them for our friends and family members.
Thank you, and have a nice day,
