Whose Turn is it?
I reckon the same old argument goes on in just about every household (particularly those with kids over the age of 8) – ‘whose turn is it to do the dishes?’
Not Mine!
Like most women these days, working outside of the home, with not one but two jobs, then coming home to continue working on my Home Businesses, blogging, touching base with people who have connected with me, updating with family and friends, browsing pics and events, checking emails – all while cooking dinner, doing the washing, chatting to the kids and hubby……
Really?
Exhausting! But, I know I’m not alone. And when the old argument ensues in the kitchen, how do we mediate and keep peace? Well, in the past I’ve been known to solve the argument by taking control, telling them all to just get out of the kitchen and do it myself. Yep, that was my solution to a peaceful household. But then one day……
I went on Strike!
Oh yes, I did. I stopped doing anything around the house. The new rule was that I was no longer the household servant, dogsbody, maid. I cleaned up after myself, did my own washing. I’d wash and dry and put away my own cups and plates – just to prove a point!
The same arguments ensued, but I was now out of the picture! I didn’t cook or clean. I went out to work. I still did the grocery shopping – a chore I can live with if I have too – and since the grocery bill was paid for out of my account, I didn’t want the family overspending on what they thought was ‘Food’.
The kids have learned a certain appreciation of what is involved with keeping house, doing chores. Being responsible for getting a meal cooked on time, getting washing done, looking after pets etc.
Holiday!
BUT, they do still think that if they’ve worked all day, then they don’t have to lift a finger – holiday time for them when they get home, regardless of how many hours they may have been out at work. Mmmm…. maybe the example I had been setting was not as appropriate as I’d thought.
If you can’t beat them, join them!
So now we live in a not perfect showroom condition home – it’s clean but looks lived in and loved. I really don’t stress over the little things – too much other stuff in life to get on with rather than stressing over whether there are dishes in the sink, crumbs on the bench or that the rubbish is filling over half the bin. Life is short. Have fun. Pursue what brings you joy. Don’t stress over the little things. The dishes will still be there tomorrow 🙂
Believe, Achieve, Teach!
Keep Smiling 🙂
