Why Goal Setting Doesn’t Work…

home-tuition-goal-setting

Throughout our lives we have been taught the importance of goal setting – setting your eye on the prize, writing goals down, reading them every day – twice a day or more even, thinking of them before we sleep, when we wake up and yes, even while we are doing something we dislike as it reminds us that the discomfort is only temporary.

smart goals

Today, a wise associate stated that we should also list those goals that seem impossible right now – something that you couldn’t have even if you used every resource available to you right now. Some of us have a long list of these types of goals as we are deep in debt, have bad credit ratings, we are living from pay day to pay day paying off debt, keeping up with bills, the demands of family and trying to enjoy some leisure time.

Goal setting is something we are either passionate about or we do half heartedly – and I have been guilty of the latter. One thing I have learned, however, is that SUCCESSFUL people set goals, and plan how to attain them!

This is why most of us fail at goal setting. We are told to write down our goals. We do this. We look at them each day. We might even have them posted on the fridge or on a mirror we use every day. Some of use the Law of Attraction and visualise, believe we have achieved the goals we have set but then wonder why that isn’t working either.

Goal Setting doesn’t work without a MAP – Method, Action, Plan (and repeat!)

If you set a goal, write it down, look at it every day, think about it before sleeping and upon awakening – do you think you will achieve it?

Stay tuned. If you seriously want to change where you are at right now, Let’s work together on a MAP.

Hi, My name is Sonia and I have had many titles and roles to date, being the mother of four awesome children who are now all grown up I'm 'Mum'. I've worked for retail giants, Real Estate Agents, Authors and Editors, I've been an advertising co ordinator, a receptionist, a manager, a travelling sales rep, a telemarketer, a spruiker, a karaoke host and an employment consultant. I am passionate about people and am now an entrepreneur with a vision to help as many people as I possibly can realise their dreams through engaging them and showing them tools that work! I'm still a mum. I still go out and do a few hours work for an employer that I love and I'm also still hosting karaoke shows - yes, I can sing a little too. I also own two fantastic businesses that I run from the comfort of wherever I can get internet access. If you'd like to know more, please contact me via facebook

  •  That’s right !! I cannot even count the times I have written down goals – BUT then failed to take action.  I guess hoping for success rather than planning for success.  The MAP is what will make it happen.

  • I have to admit I have never written my goals down, until now. I have an awesome plan of attack for the MAP method, thanks to a fantastic bunch of Ladies 🙂

Until just recently my immediate reaction to the topic of goal-setting has been RUN AWAY!  By nature I am impulsive and spontaneous.  Meeting goals requires commitment and perseverence.  Having indulged my given nature too much in the past (I am now 57 years young) I regret not tempering it with conventional wisdom by setting a few goals along the way.  By now it would simply be habit and I would be further ahead.  So the moral of the story is, for you young ‘uns, STICK TO IT!  Reasonable goal-setting is a time tested method for success and “Reach for the Stars” goal-setting can be a fun way of realizing your dreams.

  • Hey Sonia, you’re absolutely right. We need to write our goals down, but we need a plan to follow them. That’s what I still need to do: Get a strategy going.

  • Sonia, you are so right not only do you need to set attainable goals but you must develop a plan to actualize your goals without a plan it’s just a wish.
