If you have been anywhere near your television these last few days, you can’t help but hear the superb news about the Cleveland trio of women, missing over a decade, after having been kidnapped and their astonishing heroism.
Heroism of Amanda Berry
In particular, I am speaking about the heroism of Amanda Berry. Amanda barely a child herself at the tender age of 14 was kidnapped off a street in her hometown of Cleveland. Amanda took a chance; she was willing to risk it all because she knew, she desired a better life; a life that had been cruelly taken away from her by her kidnapper. Her kidnapper, whether as a test or maybe he just forgot, had left the door unlocked. Amanda, knowing the repercussions took this as a sign that her freedom could be around the corner.
Even the fear of her captor returning did nothing to stop Amanda from taking the chance of banging loudly on the door to the outside and screaming at the top of her lungs all in the efforts that someone other than her captor would be on the other side of the door and hear her.
Sure enough, her angel was on the other side. Thank goodness for the good samaritan neighbor who did not turn a blind eye but instead was willing to find out what was behind the door.
The Human Spirit
What does this tell you about the character of Amanda Berry? She was barely grown, only 14, so how did she become such a fighter for survival. Who knows how long Amanda had been looking for the one way out to freedom? When the police came, they found Michele Knight and Gina DeJesus in the house. Evidently they were not making any move to leave the premises. After so many years of being in captivity, Michele and Gina somehow did not associate leaving with freedom. Not so for Amanda, once out she ran to the neighbors house and put in that dramatic 911 call.
Amanda Berry had found her will to live, to survive and to overcome. Amanda had a decided heart and she had decided that she was going to take a risk for freedom for herself, her roommates and her daughter. Amanda took the lead and followed her heart’s desires. And she won!
