One of my pet peeves is when people say that they cannot change. You see that when they say “well, this is the way I am,” or “I’ve done it this way so long I’m not going to change anything.” Older people (not me) are known generally as “set in their ways,” but young folks also develop habits that they are unwilling to change. Change is always good and even necessary if it is for the better.
Do you have a mindset that is open to new learning, new ways of doing things on a daily basis? I know I do. I am always looking for a better way. The world will force changes upon us enough, but I am talking about having a mindset of being willing to make changes for the better. You have heard the saying that doing the same things over and over again and expecting different results is insanity. Being stubborn has prevented many from achieving any real success. I am sure that has been me at times!
Many years ago when I was in college I auditioned for a spot in a choral group. The instructor heard my voice and told me that I was one of the “true basses” that ever walked through his doors. That labeled me as far as what my expectations were for myself. Some years later I decide to take some serious voice lessons. I studied and trained and after about 3 years I gave some pretty impressive performances, at least I thought so by what others were telling me. Then my voice teacher told me that he thought I had much more vocal range that could be developed. So I stopped training as a bass and began training as a tenor! That’s like taking up a whole new instrument, but I did it and it has served me well. Because I was willing to change (and that was painful at the moment) my full potential at something I liked to do has been realized and has become a part of who I am.
So, if you are doing something that seems not to be working, don’t be afraid to change course. Don’t be afraid to learn new things. Only good can come of it, as long as you apply what you learn. Don’t be afraid to turn off the TV or to turn away the video games. Time wasted is opportunity passing you by. That opportunity rests upon someone else who has positioned himself to recognize it and embrace it when it appears. You always have a choice, so choose to change. Learn to love change!
