Of course we’re gonna kick off our alphabetical list of marketing BS with A. Because it’s first.
Before we begin, I gotta point something out…
Some of the stuff I lampoon in this list is helpful.
Lots is not.
Understand what I’m saying.
Think about it.
Just don’t get your panties in a bunch if I stomp all over a concept you’re married to.
Cool?
Don’t be a sissy.
OK, here goes…
‘Authentic’
This worthless term should actually be “Genuine”
Why? Because people are genuine.
Documents are authentic.
You don’t have to take my word for it, look it up.
Even if I were wrong about that, the word authentic is overused and comically makes people who use it seem dishonest. Because what they mean is honest.
Or truthful.
And what do we call people who are always pointing out how honest they are?
That’s right.
Liars.
Because anyone who is constantly crowing about their honesty is almost certainly dishonest. That’s just the way it is.
Ya know what you should be instead of authentic?
Yourself.
Keep it real.
Talk the way you talk and walk your own walk.
Hold your light up high overhead and let that mother shine.
No need to be rude or obnoxious about it.
Unless that’s who you are.
Let ‘er rip and let the chips fall where they may.
Lots of people won’t like you when you do that.
Screw ’em.
They’re not your posse anyway.
Enough people will love you for who you are and having the cojones to say what they’re afraid to say.
Whenever anyone starts throwing the ‘A word’ around, remember this.
Know yourself.
Then get out there and let the world know who you are too.
