In my last article, I talked about the #1 Reason Network Marketers Fail. If you haven’t read it, be sure to check it out.
What’s the secret to getting people to give you their email address?
You’ve got to make it worthwhile for them. The average person doesn’t need any more email. In fact, they probably wish they got less of it.
Think about your inbox for a second. Do you have dozens of emails waiting for you? Do you feel apprehension when you look in there, because it seems like such a chore to go through all the junk? You’re not alone.
Your prospects feel the same way, and it isn’t getting any better.
Consider that you’re asking people to add to all that clutter, and you can see why they don’t want to give you their email address.
So what’s a smart marketer to do?
Bribe ’em.
That’s right. You’ve got to offer them something so interesting that they’ll forget about their already stuffed inbox and give you permission to pack it even more.
You can call your offer a lead magnet, an ethical bribe or simply an opt-in offer. It doesn’t matter what you call it, as long as you understand the concept.
An opt-in offer is something you agree to give to your visitors in exchange for their permission to send them emails about your offers.
Pretty simple, eh?
But there are pitfalls.
For instance, people have a tendency to give you a fake email. You’ve probably done it yourself. Visitors to your site will actually make up an email address just to get your free stuff.
That’s not all. Even if they give you a good email address, they may have no intention of ever reading your emails. They may even build a filter to send your emails directly to the trash so they never even see them.
Imagine all the emails sent that never reach their intended audience because of spam filters, poor delivery and the recipient sending them to the trash without ever opening them. It’s tragic. But that’s a topic for a future article.
For now, understand that you’ve got to have an opt-in offer, attractively presented, to entice your visitors to subscribe to your email list.
You’ve got to overcome your visitor’s natural reluctance to give up their email list with an offer that’s so compelling, they’re actually interested in getting what you offer.
That’s important, because if you’re offering something that doesn’t address their problem or isn’t interesting to them, your subscriber won’t want the offer after they receive it, and they won’t want to read your emails either.
Remember this, because it’s critical to your success when building an email list. Your opt-in bribe must be over-the-top cool and useful to your prospect or it will fall flat. Even if you get lots of people to subscribe to get your offer, you can ruin your reputation with them if the offer is junk.
Next time I’ll go over some ways to make sure you collect good email addresses.
