Maybe you’re interested in this internet marketing thing… whatever it is…? You think that you might like a piece of the pie, you like the idea of working for yourself and creating a laptop lifestyle though, in reality, you haven’t got a clue what it’s all about! Looking at the image above and seeing all the dimensions involved in internet marketing, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. However, if you’re just starting out you can keep it simple and get going with just a small handful of tools, which you can add to as time progresses and you become more experienced.

What is internet marketing?

Internet marketing is the online equivalent of traditional offline marketing like radio advertising, television commercials and newspaper ads. It’s a process that uses online media to help you reach your customers and prospects with messages about your company’s products or services.

Internet marketing may sound like a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be. Some of the simplest online marketing techniques include sending emails, posting on social media platforms and using chatbots. These are just a few examples out of many that can help you get started with internet marketing for your business today!

Why do I need it for my business?

Internet marketing is necessary for online businesses to succeed. It’s a way of getting your company, products or services in front of potential customers who are already online. You need internet marketing because it increases your visibility online, which means more people will be able to see what you have for sale.

Who should be doing it?

Anyone who wants an online presence and visibility for their business, whether you have a physical store, sell physical products and services, or digital products.

Tools you’ll need to get started

  • An autoresponder to gather your leads – You may have heard the saying that “the money is in the list”. If you’re selling directly from your store or website you may well be gathering customers email addresses so that you can add them to your database. However, if you’re marketing affiliate products, for example, then you need to make sure that you collect the names and email addresses from your leads so that you can communicate with them again in the future. Remember, they may not buy from you straight away, though if you can send regular emails chances are that they will buy from you in the future. If you haven’t collected their information then you’re basically leaving money on the table! Note: always include an unsubscribe link so that your contact can opt-out again if they so choose.
  • A capture page/funnel builder – In order to capture your prospect’s email details, you need something to capture that information with. Building a capture page that offers your potential customers a free giveaway (eg, report, eBook, guide) in exchange for their name and email address not only lets them show their interest, though also gets them to give their consent to hearing from you again in the future.
  • There are other tools you can add to your business toolbox – Tracking tools, rotator, website/blog, for example. To start with though, just keep it simple. Build your capture page, generate leads, store those leads on your autoresponder, and email your list daily. Work to build up a list of qualified customers who give you permission to contact them again in the future.

Tips for getting the most out of your internet marketing efforts

You need to know who you are targeting online. Determine who your perfect customer is, someone who is looking for what you have to offer, and cater your content specifically for them.

Ideally, you can build up to having a website/blog, plus a social media presence can help you gain an audience that will follow you online.

Though for starters keep it simple, and just get started!

Hi, Lesley here. Having "retired" from the day job, I've launched into online marketing. I've shelved the shiny new objects (products) that promise the earth and deliver nothing, and am now focussing on the tools and platforms that deliver! My aim is to help guide you to build your own successful online businesses and avoid pitfalls along the way. I'll only recommend the products and services that I use myself.
