I used to be in a hurry all the time.
Didn’t matter what it was, I always wanted to get done with whatever it was I happened to be doing as quickly as possible.
Most of the time it didn’t really matter.
There’s just something about finishing a task that makes me feel good. Maybe you’re felt the same at one time or another.
I remember way back when i got out of the Army and first started driving a truck. (now there’s an occupation where everyone’s in a hurry) I had a sense of urgency about everything I did, and I always wanted to maximize my time. While those are good things, you can overdo them if you’re not careful.
One day I was assigned a load that was almost already late.
I had to get across the outskirts of LA during morning traffic. Tension built up inside of me and I became more aware of the clock than anything else.
Then I hit a traffic jam.
Just as I was about to blow a gasket and start freaking out, I came upon the reason for the slowdown.
There was someone lying in the road with a white sheet covering them.
That’s not a good sign.
I remember thinking “That guy is never gonna get to wherever he was going.”
Right then and there, I decided that I didn’t need to be in such a hurry all the time.
Most things will wait the extra few minutes.
I remember writing “BRAKE” in big black letters at the top of my windshield with a dry erase marketer to remind me that I always have the option to slow down.
I’ve kept that attitude ever since.
Sometimes I start to forget about it, but then something usually happens to remind me to back off a little.
Life is much smoother and easier that way.
