Disadvantages of Working at Home

Disadvantages of Working at Home

Sometimes when a person is making that fateful decision of whether to quit his or her job out in the brick-and-mortar world and go to work on his or her own computer from home, the only things that they can see are the advantages — and there ARE a lot of advantages. But there are also some disadvantages, and before making the decision to work from home, it is wise to look at both sides of the issue.

Please see: What I do on the Internet.

Being your own boss, setting your own work hours, and avoiding the hassle of the commute are all obvious advantages, but some of the disadvantages that you should also consider are:

1. There won’t be a steady paycheck. When you work for a company, you do have to put in a certain number of hours each day and you do have to be at work during specific hours, but in exchange for that, the company provides you will a paycheck at regular intervals. You know how much that check will be and you know when you will get it. Working from home is not like that. You earn money, but getting paid on a specific day is not a given.

Take a look at: My website.

2. There won’t be any company benefits. The company that you work for now probably has an employee benefit package that includes health coverage for you and your family. You will have to provide your own benefit package, and private health care insurance is very expensive.

3. Your family and friends will think of you as unemployed and thus available to run errands, drink coffee, chat on the phone, and generally goof off. You know you are working, but when you don’t get up, get dressed, and leave home to go to a job, the rest of the world sees you as unemployed. This might seem to be insignificant, but when you work from home, you will realize that it is a real problem.

I could list other disadvantages of working from home, but you probably get the idea here. Just weigh the advantages against the disadvantages; or, as my daddy always said, “Look before you leap!”
