The Gun or the Gunner?

A Question Please!

The following excerpt got me thinking

Mr. President, instead of gun safety, let’s talk about human safety
Written by Allen West on October 2, 2015

I send my heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost loved ones and to those wounded in the shooting at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon. Those students went to school yesterday simply to better themselves and create opportunities so they could pursue the American dream.
By now you no doubt know that ten people were killed and another seven injured Thursday after 26-year-old Chris Harper Mercer opened fire in a classroom at a community college southern Oregon.
Douglas County Sheriff John Hanlin said the gunman was shot and killed during an exchange of gunfire with officers at Umpqua Community College.
Strangely, it has been confirmed that one of the heroes who took down the Islamic jihadist on the Paris-bound train did attend Umpqua Community College. Coincidence? Who knows…
At this time of heightened homeland security and concerns of domestic Islamic terrorism, when just this week the Chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee spoke about hundreds of individuals who have traveled to fight for ISIS, nothing should be taken lightly.
A good leader waits and takes in the facts bit by bit before making any proclamations. Sadly, President Obama could not restrain himself and went into his normal rant before all the facts were in. This is not about new “gun safety” laws. Guns have a safety mechanism on them. And for responsible gun owners there are gun safety courses that advance individual firearm confidence and proficiency. I think it is time we stop talking about gun safety and begin to have a discussion about human safety.

His viewpoint is above, the following is all mine.

Did you know that there is a common thread throughout this and other rants made by the government and other Nay Sayers in respect to the problems associated with Gun Laws throughout the United States and the world. It seems the reigning opinion is that the removal of guns will keep people safe and alive, especially the governmental leadership that has yet to prove it’s adequacy in running the government of this country. As far as the other Nay Sayers, it seems that there is an abrupt stoppage in putting their fingers on the causes of the problems we face now.

The minute there is a shooting anywhere that includes numbers of people as opposed to one or two there is an immediate call to write more restrictive laws “For the Protection of” the people. But, face it, when has that ever worked? And as far as the removal of the offending piece of metal that is the culprit in these heinous crimes against humanity, may I offer a mere thought, what happened before guns, people still killed people be it with a knife, spear, arrow, rope, animal, or another human being, how about explosives, how about electricity, how about water, and the list goes on and on and on. So what is the answer, in my estimation, don’t look at the tool used, look at who’s using it! It’s not the inanimate object that offends, it is the inanimate object in the hands of the animated wielder, or am I mistaken?

I ask this, if a gun killed or wounded those people and all the others listed in these mass murders, how did that happen? I have seen and used many guns over the years and have yet to see a gun jump up, load itself, aim itself, and squeeze the trigger. And to the best of my knowledge that has never happened, ever!

Remember the common thread I spoke of, that common thread is the offender, not the gun, so why do those in government and those who rant about the obscenity of having guns focus on guns, instead of the perpetrators who use those guns? Never could figure that out,.

Retired and loving it, share my time and space with those who matter to me, been a lot of places, done a lot of things, but now, I'm a husband, father, grandfather and that's what's important. I answer to my God, my wife, and my family, that's it. I retain responsibility for what I say and do. Wish more people did.
