How To Keep Yourself On Track To Reach Your Marketing Goals

OK. You’ve got your marketing command center (office) set up and you’re ready to rock n roll.

Or are you?

Do you have any idea what you’re going to do next? If you’re like most marketers, you have big dreams, high hopes and you’re motivated to take on the world.

Then reality sets in… and you realize you have absolutely no idea what you’re doing. Even if you’ve been marketing for a year or more, if you’re not making steady progress, you’re probably still struggling.

You’ve got to be consistent with your marketing tasks. Writing emails and blog posts, recording videos and promoting your message are all important. But promotion is the #1 main thing you’ve got to do every single day.

You may have a great message, but if nobody hears it, your efforts won’t produce the results you want.

That’s where scheduling comes in.

The only way you’ll ever stay consistent is if you have a list of tasks to do every day. Prioritize those tasks and make sure that they get done… every day. Brick by brick you build a wall, post by post you build an online marketing business.

Just after the Great Depression, the CEO of a large company met with an efficiency expert named Ivy Lee. Mr. Lee was explaining to the CEO that he could improve the profits of the company by showing them better ways to do things.

The CEO said “We already know what to do. If you can show me a way we can get more of it done, I’ll pay you any price within reason.”

Mr. Lee replied “I’ll show you a method that only takes a few minutes a day, and I guarantee that if you put it into practice, you’ll increase productivity by 100%.”

The CEO agreed. Mr. Lee told him to take a piece of paper and write down the 6 most important things he had to do the next day. The CEO took a few minutes and wrote them down. Then Lee told him to number his list in importance from 1 to 6, with 1 being the most important and 6 being the least important. The CEO quickly prioritized his list.

Then Lee said “Tomorrow, when you come in to work, begin with number 1 on your list. Let nothing interrupt you until it’s finished. When you’re done, move on to number 2, and so on down the list. Don’t worry if you don’t finish everything on the list. If you can’t get it done following this method, it’s unlikely that you could have gotten more done with any other method.”

The CEO assured Lee that he’d give his plan a try, they shook hands, and Mr. Lee left.

Three weeks later the CEO sent Mr. Lee a check for $25,000. With the check he included a note that said Mr. Lee’s method was the most effective plan for increasing productivity that he’d ever seen.

I don’t know about you, but I’m betting that the CEO was more of an expert on getting things done than I am. If he put so much weight on this method, it seems like you should at least give it a try, doesn’t it?

Let’s get busy.
